Beijing says Taiwan question brooks no foreign interference
A Chinese defense spokesperson on Monday expressed hope the United States will correct its strategic perception of China, stressing that the Taiwan question brooks no external interference.
Defense Ministry spokesman Jiang Bin made the remarks in response to recent US comments and actions related to Taiwan.
According to media reports, the US recently released a new National Security Strategy stating that it does not support any unilateral change to the status quo across the Taiwan Strait. In addition, the US House of Representatives last week approved a National Defense Authorization Act containing multiple negative provisions concerning Taiwan.
Jiang stressed: "There is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China. That is a historical and legal fact beyond dispute, as well as the true status quo across the Taiwan Strait. How to resolve the Taiwan question is entirely China's own affair and brooks no external interference. Any attempt to use Taiwan to contain China is doomed to fail."
He said the US should earnestly abide by the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiques, stop sending wrong signals to "Taiwan independence" separatist forces, and cease actions that escalate tensions across the Taiwan Strait.
"We hope the US will correct its strategic perception of China," Jiang said.
The spokesman expressed hope that Washington can meet China halfway to uphold the principles of no conflict and no confrontation, promote the building of a bilateral military relationship based on equality, mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and steady, positive development, and inject more certainty and positive energy into bilateral ties and global peace and stability.
