Shanghai Renji Hospital marked the 20th anniversary of its international medical services with a ceremony on Thursday that launched a new chapter in its global healthcare journey.

The event was graced by the return of several international pediatric liver transplant patients, including a Malaysian girl who received a life-saving transplant at the hospital in 2014.

The Malaysian girl, then 3 years old, was suffering from life-threatening liver cirrhosis due to biliary atresia. After exhausting medical options in her home country, she was brought to Renji Hospital Affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, where Xia Qiang, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and president of the hospital, led a team to successfully perform a living-donor liver transplant.

Renji Hospital's pediatric liver transplant team has since treated over 60 children from several countries, including Malaysia, the Philippines, and Mongolia. Moreover, the doctors shared their expertise with their counterparts in Malaysia and helped a major local medical institution establish its own capability for pediatric living-donor liver transplant surgery.
