Tokyo called on to foster correct perception

President Xi Jinping has highlighted the coexistence of opportunities and challenges in the current China-Japan relations, and urged Japan's new cabinet to establish a correct perception toward China and adhere to the overarching direction of peace, friendship and cooperation between the two nations.

Xi made the remarks on Friday during a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.

He underlined the need for Japan to adhere to the clear stipulations in the four key political documents between China and Japan on significant issues, such as history and the Taiwan question, to ensure that the foundation of bilateral ties remains unshaken.

The Murayama Statement, which offered a profound reflection on Japan's history of aggression and extended apologies to affected countries, should be upheld, he added.

Xi pointed out the vast potential for China-Japan cooperation and called for joint efforts to uphold a multilateral trade system and ensure stable and unimpeded supply chains.

He also stressed the need to manage differences effectively, and avoid letting disputes define bilateral ties.

Takaichi said Japan is willing to maintain high-level exchanges with China, enhance communication at all levels, enhance mutual understanding and promote cooperation, adding that Tokyo is committed to building constructive, stable bilateral ties with Beijing.

On the Taiwan question, she said that Japan remains committed to the position stated in the Japan-China joint communique in 1972. Japan fully understands and respects the People's Republic of China's stand that Taiwan is an inalienable part of the territory of the PRC, according to the joint communique.
