The number of cross-border passengers travelling on the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong High-speed Railway has reached about 100 million, since the Hong Kong section of the railway commenced operations seven years ago, according to railway operators.

The Hong Kong section of the high-speed railway began its service on Sept 23, 2018, with the first train departing from Shenzhen North Station to the special administrative region.

The opening marked the first time Hong Kong was connected to the high-speed railway network on the Chinese mainland, helping inject strong momentum into the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

In the initial period of operation, the daily average number of cross-border passengers was less than 40,000, according to Jiang Wanni, duty station manager at Shenzhen North Station.

"By 2025, the number had increased to nearly 100,000 daily, representing a 2.5-fold increase compared to the early days of operation," Jiang said.

Over the seven years, the number of direct destinations of high-speed trains from Hong Kong has increased to 96, helping establish an efficient and convenient cross-border passenger transport network, according to China Railway Guangzhou Group.
