Japan should make the best of China's rapid development and forge ahead greater cooperation with China, Wang Chen, minister of the State Council Information Office, told Japanese media Monday, said at a press conference for Japanese reporters on August 30.

Wang was responding to the question how he looks at China's overtaking Japan to become the second largest economy in the world on the sideline of the Sixth Beijing-Tokyo Forum, which he termed "an important platform of non-governmental communication between China and Japan".

China "cares but also does not care" about the ranking, Wang said.

"We care, as it indicates China's relatively fast development speed, and it marks the start of a new phase," Wang said.

"But we also does not care about it, to keep cool-minded and does not take it as a great matter," Wang said, adding that China's GDP per capita is just $3,680, 10 percent of that of Japan.

Meanwhile, he said that Japanese media should play a postive role in deepening the mutual understanding between China and Japan. Wang Chen also answered questions ranging from how is the status quo of the Sino-Japanese relation and how will China' s development affect the bilateral relationship.
