NEW YORK: The New York Islanders moved out of last place in the NHL standings with a 2-1 win over the Eastern Conference-leading New York Rangers on Tuesday.

Joey MacDonald made 35 saves as the Islanders (4-7-1) won their second successive game after a six-game losing streak despite being out-shot 36-19 and out-played most of the night.

MacDonald, who is filling in for the injured Rick DePietro, made several important saves to earn his seventh career win in his 26th NHL game.

"Tonight we were out-shot by a lot but we stuck to our game plan and capitalised on our chances," MacDonald told reporters.

"I'd rather be at my end than have only four or five shots a period.

"They put some pressure on us in the second period, but our defence had some big blocks."

Islanders' coach Scott Gordon praised MacDonald for his performance as well as giving credit to the team's ability to kill off the Rangers' power play. Both of the Islanders' goals were scored while they were a man down.

"Our penalty kill and goaltender bailed us out," Gordon said.
