Red Bull Racing's chief technical officer Adrian Newey spent the night in hospital after crashing heavily in a historic sportscar event on Sunday.

Newey, 47, a keen amateur racer, was lapping slower traffic in his E-type Jaguar during a practice session at the Goodwood revival meeting in England when he left the track, spun across the grass and collided heavily with the wall.

Despite climbing out of the car without any assistance, the Englishman was taken to a nearby hospital for checks.

As it was his second such crash in three months – he wrecked a Ford GT40 at Spa-Francorchamps last Autumn – he was kept in for observation overnight.

Newey said: "I have no recollection of the event but I am told that we ended up with three cars abreast while lapping a backmarker.

"I was on the outside and ended up being pushed out onto the grass. The damage to the car is quite light but I must have hit my head on the rollbar.

"I felt a bit dazed in the ambulance and now I feel as though I have severe jet lag."

IRL IndyCar star Dario Franchitti was taken to the same hospital as Newey after he crashed his similar E-Type on the same day. Both were uninjured.
