The Republic of Guyana donated 61 books on the history and culture of Guyana and the Caribbean to the Institute of Latin American Studies of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences on Thursday, marking the 61st anniversary of the establishment of the People's Republic of China.

David Dabydeen, the country's first and current ambassador to China, said there are many historical linkages between China and Guyana, and he said he wants to learn more about China's history and culture.

One book, The Chinese in British Guyana, explained how Chinese people have contributed to the economic, social, cultural and political progress of the country.

Dabydeen, on behalf of his government, also said he would like to see a Confucius Institute established in Guyana.

Zheng Bingwen, director of the institute, exchanged books and research documents on the Caribbean studies with Dabydeen.
