At the bus station outside Shanxi Normal University, 12 members from the school's 236 Kindness Club are waiting for the bus to Chengju primary school where they give lessons as volunteer teachers every Friday.

Ten years ago, eight girls living in the school's No 236 dormitory founded the Kindness Fund to help people in need by selling wastepaper and plastic bottles.

Four years later, just before they left the school, their fellow students built the Kindness Club and named it after dormitory number 236.

Now by selling recyclable waste and raising money, the club is aiding dozens of poor children and has established six mini-libraries in primary and secondary schools. Members of the club also volunteer to teach music, art and sports in four different primary schools.

Their benevolence has helped educate disabled and poor children, elderly people with no family, and sanitation workers.

Over the past 10 years, the 236 Kindness Club has become a part of the school culture and attracted over 10,000 college students to volunteer for the organization.
