A series of prehistoric Yellow River petroglyphs, or rock engravings, which date back around nine thousand years were found in Baiyin city, Gansu province, in May 2010.

The petroglyphs include 24 pictures which cover a space measuring about 7.5 meters high and 4.4 meters wide. There are ten pictures representing humans, five pictures of human heads, eight animal pictures, one depicting a utensil and one abraded picture, and they can be divided into three categories: family, hunting and farming.

Liu Zaiming, director of the Party history office of Pingchuan district committee, said that the petroglyphs are located on the red sandstone of Dalang Mountain in the Yellow River Hongshan canyon, which is difficult to reach. Wind and rain erosion has turned the rocks dark brown but the engravings are clearly visible.
