Liao founded a media company, Weiyu, in February, in the city that according to her has beautiful scenery and nice people. Liao said that she madethe decision shortly after arriving in the island city.

A frequent user of the ferries shuttling between Pingtan and Taiwan, Liao noticed that many visitors to Pingtan would spend time touring the city and then visit Meizhou Island near the coastline of Putian city in Fujian,in order to pay tribute to Mazu, the Chinese Sea Goddess.

Liao commented that people from Taiwan and the mainland share the same bloodline and culture, and that the Mazu belief ties the cross-Straits community together. Liao added that her ancestors originated in Fujian's Quzhou and Zhangzhou area, and came to live in Taiwan around 100 years ago.

Wei Junkai used to visit the countryside of Pingtan and captured the beautiful, unspoiled scenery with his camera. He talked about his perception of Pingtan, saying that he marveled at Pingtan's well-preserved beaches, bizarre rocks, and stone houses made from granite.

Wei also said that he felt sorry when villagers told him that many ancient stone houses were replaced by modern buildings. He suggested that the granite houses, as an important part of Pingtan's culture, should be carefully preserved.
