A new village library that was opened at the Pingtan Liushui Primary School, in Pingtan, Fujian province, on Oct 19, is China's tenth library to be launched as part of the village library fundraising program of the Liushui School Nanqiang Village Society.

Wu Mingyun, vice head of the Pingtan county education bureau, Xu Qiaoqing, vice secretary of the Liushui?town Party committee, Lin Caiying, headmaster of the primary school, Dai Ying, Youth League Committee secretary of Journalism and Communication College of Xiamen University, and members of the Nanqiang Village Society took part in the opening ceremony.

The new library boasts more than 4,000 books – including works of literature and books about science as well as magazines.

Volunteers from the Nanqiang Village Society spent about one year collecting books from schools in Xiamen, sorting them out and packing and delivering them to the village.

Wu conveyed his appreciation to the volunteers and urged the library to make sure that each book would be used to help promote education in the Pingtan Comprehensive Pilot Zone.

Dai gave a presentation about Xiamen University's voluntary service program for village libraries in the Western Taiwan Strait area, and said he hopes the initiative will contribute to the healthy development of young people from all walks of life.
