Twelve test-tube babies are born in Xiamen every day, according to the press.
Xiamen's first test-tube baby was born in the Reproductive Medicine Center of Xiamen 174 Hospital in 2000, when less than 100 people had accepted test-tube baby procedures in the city. The number increased to 2,000 people in 2010, and reached more than 5,000 in 2014.
There are now three first-class hospitals in Xiamen that have obtained access to assisted reproductive technologies, such as the test-tube baby technology. These include Xiamen First Hospital, Xiamen 174 Hospital, and Xiamen Maternal and Children Health Hospital. All of the hospitals boast success rates of more than 50 percent in test-tube baby procedures. Eight test-tube babies are born in Xiamen 174 Hospital every day.
Despite the boom in the test-tube baby market, most parents undergoing the procedure are ashamed to tell people their babies were born using test-tube procedures.
