BEIJING, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- China held a gathering to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Yang Chengwu, a renowned military leader in the country's revolutionary times, on Monday.

Yang, born in 1914 in southeast China's Fujian Province, was deputy chief of general staff of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) and deputy secretary general and member of the Central Military Commission (CMC). He was also vice chairman of the sixth National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).

Yu Zhengsheng, chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, attended the event and met Yang's family.

Yang spent his life as a revolutionist and fighter who devoted his life to the CPC and people, greatly contributing to the country's revolution and socialist construction, said Fan Changlong, deputy CMC chairman, at the meeting.

Yang passed away in 2004.
