Anhui to launch initiatives to preserve cultural heritage
Updated: 2013-06-24

Anhui is set to launch six initiatives in a bid to create a province known for its significant cultural heritage, according to the Anhui Provincial Administration of Cultural Heritage.

The six initiatives involve:

Conducting a survey on movable cultural heritage

Protecting the Anhui section of the Grand Canal

Exploring new ways to protect ancient homes in southern Anhui

Implementing a project for an exhibition showcasing the most important sites

Initiating a project to upgrade museums

Implementing a project to protect revolutionary cultural heritage

The Grand Canal was a great water conservancy project in ancient times, and China has applied to have it listed as a World Cultural Heritage in 2014. More than 150 kilometers of the Grand Canal ran through Huaibei and Suzhou, and Anhui is striving to improve its water quality and to build a monitoring system in a bid to prepare for an inspection by UN experts.

The State Administration of Cultural Heritage has reportedly officially selected Chengkan Village in Huangshan and Huangtian Village in Xuancheng as model projects for the protection of cultural heritage.
