北京時(shí)間29日凌晨，雅典殘奧會(huì)落下帷幕。中國(guó)代表團(tuán)異軍突起，以63塊金牌和141塊獎(jiǎng)牌的絕對(duì)優(yōu)勢(shì)高居榜首，英國(guó)和美國(guó)分列第二和第三。中國(guó)運(yùn)動(dòng)員的優(yōu)異表現(xiàn)成為本屆賽會(huì)最大的亮點(diǎn)，這也標(biāo)志著殘奧會(huì)長(zhǎng)期由西方國(guó)家占據(jù)優(yōu)勢(shì)的局面被一舉打破。
然而，27日的一起重大交通事故為殘奧會(huì)閉幕式蒙上了一絲陰影，一輛公車在載一批師生赴雅典觀賽的途中與一輛運(yùn)載玻璃的卡車相撞并起火，至少7名高中生當(dāng)場(chǎng)死亡，12人受重傷。外電報(bào)道如下：The Paralympic Games have been overshadowed by a tragic road accident that claimed the lives of seven high school students who were travelling to Athens to attend the competitions. Yesterday's Closing Ceremony was therefore limited to protocol segments, such as the entry of athletes, the speech by the IPC President, Phil Craven, the handover of the Paralympic flag to the Beijing Organising Committee and the extinguishing of the flame. Claim one's life表示“奪走某人的生命”，因?yàn)閏laim有“索取，索賠，認(rèn)領(lǐng)，申請(qǐng)”等多種含義。
為了悼念這次車禍中遇難的學(xué)生，雅典奧組委宣布取消28日晚閉幕式的文藝演出，只保留運(yùn)動(dòng)員入場(chǎng)、國(guó)際殘奧委主席克雷文致辭、雅典市向北京市交接殘奧會(huì)會(huì)旗和圣火熄滅儀式。
