和漢語一樣，英語中以heart組成的短語很多，并且在日常生活中的使用頻率也很高，如 lose heart（喪失信心），lose one's heart to somebody / something（喜歡上某人或某物），learn by heart（記?。?，heart of gold（美好的心靈），break one's heart（傷心），do sb.'s heart good（使某人高興），have one's heart in the right place（心地善良），have one's heart in one's boots（非常驚恐；非常緊張），in one's heart of hearts（在內(nèi)心深處），lose one's heart to（傾心于……），set one's heart on sth.（決心得到某物），take to heart（認(rèn)真關(guān)注；對(duì)……想不開），with all one's heart（真心誠意地）等等。
在人類社會(huì)的早期，由于科學(xué)相對(duì)落后，人們對(duì)于自身的認(rèn)識(shí)也存在很大的局限性，他們普遍認(rèn)為心臟是人體的思維器官，因此heart一詞多與人的思想情緒有關(guān)。而且很多短語在長期的使用過程中，其含意也發(fā)生了較大的變化，有些甚至與其字面含意相去甚遠(yuǎn)。After one’s own heart的英文釋義為：well liked because of agreeing with your own feelings, interests and ideas，不難看出，它是一個(gè)形容詞短語，多置于名詞之后作后置修飾語。在漢語中大致可以翻譯為“情投意合的；意趣相投的；兩情相悅的；正中下懷的”等。
例如：
Lucy and Richard have worked in the same office for so many years. She has long admired Richard as the man after her own heart.
露西和理查德在同一辦公室共事多年了。她一直把理查德視為知己。
