英語中有很多詞組是出自于莎士比亞的著作，be Greek to somebody這個短語也是出自其名劇Julius Caesar（裘力斯·凱撒）。西塞羅要告訴他的朋友凱撒就要被殺死了，可當時凱撒在場。為了保密，西塞羅就用希臘語對他的朋友講了這件事。參與這一謀殺計劃的吉亞斯卡曾經(jīng)聽到過這一計劃。后來，對這一計劃表示關(guān)心但又不知具體內(nèi)情的人就去問吉亞斯卡聽到了什么。吉亞斯卡巧妙地回答："For my own part, it was Greek to me."，表示他完全不知道西塞羅說的是什么。
現(xiàn)在，be Greek to somebody這一短語被人們用來表示這樣的含義：beyond one's understanding，也就是“完全不懂，一竅不通”。
例如：
She tried to explain her theories about modern poetry but it was all Greek to me.
她試圖闡明她的現(xiàn)代詩歌理論，但我卻一竅不通。
