Brand 除了“商標、牌子”的意思外，還有一個意思是：“烙印”，例如：These cattle have my brand on them.（這些牛身上打了烙印，標明是我的牛。）因此，brand-new的意思應(yīng)該是“像新打成的鐵器一樣新”。英國大文豪莎士比亞筆下就多次出現(xiàn)fire new這個詞，意思和brand-new沒有區(qū)別。和brand的這個意思相關(guān)的成語還有：snatch a brand from the burning，意思是“釜底抽薪”。

Brand-new這個詞現(xiàn)在除了用來指具體的物體外，還可以指抽象的東西。
例如：That’s a brand-new idea.
