英語里有好些習(xí)慣用語都和“水: water”這個(gè)字有關(guān)系。例如：hot water，cold water or deep water。在英語里用這些詞匯組成的習(xí)慣用語就和水一樣普遍。但是，它們都有一個(gè)共同的特點(diǎn)，那就是它們一般都含有貶意。
In hot water的意思并不是“在熱水中”，它的確切意思是指某人或某些人遇到非常麻煩的問題了。舉個(gè)例子來說吧：
例句-1："Joe is really in hot water now -- his girl friend just found out he's seeing another woman."
這句話的意思是：“喬伊現(xiàn)在可是難辦了，因?yàn)樗呐笥炎罱l(fā)現(xiàn)他另外還有一個(gè)女朋友。”
例句-2："That movie actor tried to cheat on his income tax, but he got caught and now he's in hot water with the government."
這是說：“那個(gè)電影演員想在繳納所得稅的時(shí)候弄虛作假，可是給稅務(wù)局發(fā)現(xiàn)了?，F(xiàn)在，他可麻煩了?！?br/>
