古英語中，hey這個詞已經(jīng)被用于表達(dá)高興、愉快、驚訝或者困惑等感情，或是用來引起別人注意，就像在下面的句子中起到的作用: “Hey, wait a minute!” “Hey, that's a great idea!”
Hey 的另一種功能是“強調(diào)，引起聽者對自己下面所說的話的注意”。1986年，語言學(xué)家艾里克-漢普就發(fā)現(xiàn)hey的這種新用法在語言的使用頻率越來越高。特別是漢普將hey的這種用法解釋為表達(dá)“贊同，并且暗示下面的話是真的或者顯而易見的”。 Hey的這個意思就同“clearly，surely；of course”比較接近?！都~約時報》（1986年版）中有這樣一個例子"Pennzoil has been arguing that, hey, they are reasonable people." 另一個例子是迪尤爾蘇格蘭威士忌在1994年所作的一則電視廣告，廣告語說 "It's not easy at first, but hey, neither are a lot of things."
在非正式的場合hey經(jīng)常用來代替hi或者h(yuǎn)ello來打招呼。比如說， “Hey, Tim, how are you?” “ Hey, what's happening?”
