Post office recycles ALL university letters
(China Daily)
Updated: 2005-03-28 10:39

Since last October, students and teachers at South China University of Technology in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, were bothered by a continuing mystery - their letters constantly disappeared.

A teacher surnamed Zhang was determined to find out why. Zhang noticed that staff from the post office sent five to six bags of letters to a nearby recycling station every week, receiving 0.35 yuan (4.2 US cents) per kilogram.

Zhang used to think they were abandoned letters. The teacher checked and made a startling discovery.

The mail was the university's current incoming and outgoing correspondence.

Furious about the discovery, Zhang telephoned the police. Officers arrived and investigated and found a case of postal malfeasance. Three post office staff members who were involved were punished for infringing on freedom of communication, the Legal Daily reports.
