China Forum on Economic Growth 2004, featuring the theme of macro control and economic development, opened October 30 in picturesque Suzhou City, popularly known as " paradise on earth," in Jiangsu Province, East China.

Discussions and exchanges will be centered around such topics as how to understand macro control, sustainable development of China's economy, conflicts between Chinese and world economies, policy choices for economic development, opportunities and problems for "Made-in-China," growth path for Chinese companies, and prospects for China's economy in 2005, said Li Deshui, director of the National Statistics Bureau, at the opening session.

The two-day forum has attracted more than 300 Chinese and foreign economists, high-ranking government officials and senior administrators of famous corporations. Among them are Fidel V. Ramos, former president of the Philippines, and Nobel prize laureate Robert A. Mundell.

As an annual international event, the forum is aimed at focusing on the impact of the global economy on the Chinese economy, the growth tendency of the Chinese economy, challenges that may emerge in the economic fields, and business opportunities in a bid to help decision-makers, the academic communities and business world better understand the Chinese economy from the perspective of the global economic trend and statistical data of the Chinese government.
