Play captures fading hutong life in Beijing

Play Neighbors, adapted from award-winning writer Jing Yongming's novel Beijing Time, is being staged at Beijing's Chaoyang Culture Center Nine Theaters through March 12. [Photo provided to China Daily]

She also tackles some social issues in the play, such as problems brought by immigrants.

Young actors from Beijing People's Art Theater will perform in the play. The original music is composed by 28-year-old san xian player Wang Yu. San xian, a three-stringed Chinese lute, is one of the representative instruments of northern China.

"Its sound easily recalls the old Beijing, which is warm and nostalgic," says Wang, another Beijing native. "When I read the script, I recalled many memories of my childhood. I hope the younger generation will be inspired to go back to the old lifestyle and have a fresh look at the city."
