Olympics mascot panda gives birth to twins, again

(ECNS) -- Giant panda Maomao, the model for Jingjing, mascot of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, gave birth to female twins on Tuesday morning at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, carrying further the panda family's legend in sports.

The two cubs, which weighed 129 grams and 145.1 grams respectively, and the mother are all in good condition, said a source from the center in Chengdu, capital of Southwest China's Sichuan province.

Maomao also give birth to twin cubs on July 26, 2014 named Maozhu and Maosun.

The mother panda, born on Sept 6, 2003 became world famous when it inspired the creation of one of five mascots for the Beijing Olympics.

Surprisingly, Maomao's mother Yaya was born on Sept 22, 1990 when the opening ceremony for the Beijing Asian Games was held.

As a show of the family's long tradition with sports, it turns out that Yaya's mother was also model for the Asian Games mascot.

Yaya and her brother Xiangxiang were the world's first artificially-bred twins to survive.
