BEIJING - Altogether 264,000 convicts are serving their jail terms under supervision in China's communities and only 0.21 percent of them have committed another crime while serving their terms, China's Ministry of Justice said Monday.

Wu Aiying, the minister of Justice, said at a meeting here that 57 percent of China's townships and subdistrict communities had launched such services for convicts. She did not, however, give a specific number.

Convicts who received sentences with reprieves, released on parole, or deprived of political rights but allowed to serve jail terms outside prison, are put under supervision in China's communities.

Serving prison terms in communities aims to ensure convicts are able to return to society and their rights are protected.

Also, to better protect inmates' right in prison, China has installed cameras in 68 percent of its prisons, Wu Aiying said at the meeting.
