As the one month countdown to the World Expo began Thursday, authorities are asking Shanghai residents to be on their best behavior.

The Shanghai Expo Citizenship Pledge also requires residents of the host city to protect the environment, talk and dress politely, and not to litter.

The pledge was drawn up after the government culled suggestions from the 35,000 letters, e-mails and phone-calls, according to the municipal civil affairs office.

The suggestions focused on citizen behavior, such as the way to treat guests and how to dress and speak. Others related to expo visiting, travel and environment protection.

About 70 million people are expected to visit the expo which runs from May 1 to October 31.
