BEIJING: Chinese equities continued the downward trend of the previous trading day and closed lower Tuesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index below the psychologically-important 3,000-point level.

The Shanghai Composite Index lost 0.69 percent, or 20.82 points, to close at 2,982.58 points.
