Two models, one from Changan and the other from Arcfox, have won China's first approvals for Level 3 vehicles, said China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology on Monday.

With Level 3 capabilities, the car can drive itself under defined conditions, such as on highways or in traffic jams, but requires the driver to be ready to take over when prompted by the system, according to the SAE International.

The two models, both of which are electric sedans, will begin on-road pilot operations in designated areas of Beijing and Chongqing, respectively, said the MIIT.

The ministry said it had organized expert teams to carry out testing and safety assessments, and added that it will continue to refine access management and regulatory standards for intelligent connected vehicles.

Over the past several years, a growing number of carmakers have received permits to conduct Level 3 vehicle testing, including SAIC's IM Motors, BYD as well as Mercedes-Benz and BMW.
