Tetra Pak, a leading provider of food processing and packaging solutions, announced recently that its integrated production and service base in Kunshan, Jiangsu province, has received carbon neutrality verification certification from the global authoritative certification body, TUV SUD, making the facility its first carbon-neutral production base in China.

This month, the Kunshan base was also included in the "list of enterprises with outstanding performance in the construction of Suzhou zero-carbon factories", reaffirming the company’s leading practices in carbon neutrality. The company also released the Carbon Neutrality Action Report 2024.

"The carbon neutrality of the Tetra Pak Kunshan integrated production and service base is a significant milestone in our action pathway, and moreover, a brand-new starting point," Paul Zhu, president of Tetra Pak Greater China, said.

"In the future, Tetra Pak will collaborate with upstream and downstream partners to contribute to the nation's strategic goals of achieving peak carbon and carbon neutrality as soon as possible, and to play a role in global climate action," Zhu added.

The base integrates multiple functions, including packaging material production, equipment design and manufacturing, product development, technological innovation, and technical training. With its diverse operational capabilities and complex energy consumption structure, it is the most representative among Tetra Pak's production bases in China, the company said.

Achieving carbon neutrality at the Kunshan base not only lays a solid foundation for the company's goal of achieving carbon neutrality in its own operations by 2030, but also validates the effectiveness and replicability of various carbon reduction measures and management solutions.

Furthermore, the base has accumulated successful experience in cross-departmental collaboration and systematic management during the carbon neutrality process, embedding the concept of carbon reduction into daily operations and gradually developing a methodology encompassing technology application, management systems, and organizational culture.

Data indicates that Tetra Pak China is steadily advancing on its carbon reduction path. In 2024, despite growth in packaging material production, the direct greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1) from the company's operations decreased by 7.8 percent compared to 2023.

Compared to the 2019 baseline year, the direct emission intensity of packaging material production has been reduced by approximately 20 percent. In line with Tetra Pak's RE100 commitment, 100 percent of the electricity used in Tetra Pak China's operations is covered by renewable energy certificates.

In 2024, the indirect greenhouse gas emissions from Tetra Pak China's upstream and downstream value chain were about 1,003,030 tons. Despite increased packaging material production, emissions from packaging raw materials decreased by 9 percent compared to the 2019 baseline.
