High-scoring students face another roadblock

Wang Yun, score: 623
Wang inhaled too much oxygen which impaired his retina after premature birth. He gradually started losing eyesight and became totally blind at four.
Though visually impaired, he became independent by eating and dressing by himself at three and started swimming at seven.
He attended a school for the blind in Shanghai and went to school every day on his own since 13.
He is an excellent student. Besides academic performance, he also passed the bamboo flute grade examination of level 10 and piano grade examination of level 8.
His score of 623 was in the top 10 of all gaokao candidates in Shanghai. As blind candidates can only apply for three universities in Shanghai, Yan chose East China Normal University. He said his biggest regret is that he cannot apply to Fudan University because it does not enroll blind students.
