Qatar's Al-Attiyah leads on Day 1 of 2018 Dakar Rally
2018 Dakar Rally, the 40th edition of the race, started on Saturday in Lima, Peru. The rally will run south along the Pacific Coast and cross Bolivia to finish in Cordoba, Argentina, on Jan 20. Qatar's Nasser Al-Attiyah of Toyota won the first round of the rally on Saturday, Xinhua News reported.
The Dakar Rally is an annual event organized by the Amaury Sport Organization. Most of the competitive special sections are off-road, crossing dunes, mud, camel grass, rocks, and erg among others. The distances of each stage covered vary from short distances to up to 800-900 kilometers per day.
Saturday’s opening stage was easy in comparison to what’s coming up. Sunday’s Stage 2 will be a circuitous 279 km route that begins and ends in Pisco, Peru.
The competition will move on to San Juan de Marcona, also in Peru, on Monday.
